In the OAS committee the main theme debated is the use of renewable energy sources. The main delegations involved in this topic are Costa Rica, México, Uruguay, Honduras, Chile, and Canada. Mexico’s main proposal is the use of nuclear energy to be the principal source of power for countries. An opposing view was the one of Chile. Chile said that the use of nuclear power is not the way to solve this problem. Chile’s solution to the problem is the use of geothermal energy. One of their reasons to use this as their main source of energy is the great amount of volcanoes and geysers in its country. However, the geographical conditions of different countries are not the same, which would be a problem in obtaining this energy.
Furthermore, the delegation of Uruguay suggested that in order to store the energy obtained from hydroelectric, wind, and solar power it is of utmost importance to get batteries. Finally, the delegation of Costa Rica mentioned how world wide cooperation is important in order to solve this problem. Overall, several solutions were debated in this committee, but it seems that the most reasonable solution based on the agreement by several countries in the committee, in order to solve the problem is the use of solar and wind power. What will be important in this committee is to see how Mexico’s proposal of nuclear energy will be accepted by the other countries.
