In the Social Humanitarian Committee, the issues discussed were the following:
- The issue of censorship in the media, from movies, tv shows, and news, to newspapers, and public availability.
- The issue of the migration crisis in Syria, and the millions of refugees fleeing conflict.
The UK offered the idea that instead of direct censorships, special ratings would be given to every single piece of media. These ratings would impose an age demographic recommendation, but would otherwise not be enforced in the slightest.
Qatar offered the idea of outright banning the defamation of religion and political figures’ personal lives, as, in her view, they were of no importance to the general public.
On the other side, Russia and China both offered the idea of completely banning the portrayal of religion in the media, stating that if the media can’t speak of the subject, the population will ignore it as well, potentially lowering aggression between religions. They also decided to outright eliminate all forms of potentially harmful media, equating to a law firm similar to that of Big Brother.
Overall, a disagreement between the delegates on the topic of how to handle religion especially divided the group, and the subsequent lack of new ideas forced the two groups to table both resolutions.
Qatar insisted that minorities such as this one and others, including blacks, non-religious, etc., to be eradicated from their countries, since these types of minorities are capable of causing certain harm to the citizens of said country. Qatar felt that minorities should be kept minorities because of this risk, not allowed to become the dominant population.
Russia followed this up by stating that such minorities could raise the chances of a rebellion or uprising, causing turmoil in the country, with the possibility of civilian casualties.
USA and UK immediately joined force, stating that there is no issue with these minorities, and in fact, is has been proven that allowing them to prosper, the country as a whole becomes more open minded, and accepting.
Resolutions were created, with the one led by Qatar and Russia being completely negated by the committee, resulting in the passing of the resolution led by USA and UK.
